What is DNA?
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is a molecule in cells that contains genetic information for an organism's development, growth, and reproduction:
  • Structure
DNA is a double helix, a spiral ladder made up of two strands that twist around each other. The strands are held together by weak hydrogen bonds between base pairs. The base pairs are adenine (A) paired with thymine (T), and guanine (G) paired with cytosine (C).

  • Location
In eukaryotic cells, DNA is found in the nucleus and in mitochondria, the cell's powerhouses.

  • Packaging
DNA is tightly packed into chromosomes within the nucleus. During cell division, chromosomes are visible.

  • Discovery
Swiss biologist Johannes Friedrich Miescher first identified DNA in 1869. James Watson and Francis Crick later discovered the double helix structure of DNA.

  • Genetic code
DNA is the genetic code that tells the body how to grow and develop. Humans share 99.9% of their DNA with each other.
